Five Tips to Eliminate Fear Before You Pitch!

with No Comments

You need a few tips to eliminate fear before you pitch?

Last week my #100Pitches book release, workshop, and high-end industry networking event, toured to Atlanta, Georgia and it was so amazing! But, I have to admit, I was really nervous for some reason. I experienced these same feelings before my New York event. For the first time in my entire life, (and I've been on stages in some capacity since I was 11), I experienced a feeling in my stomach that was unexplainable, but I'll try to explain. It felt like I had nervous flu symptoms and at the same time I was suffering from hunger. You know how your stomach feels when you are extremely hungry and any bad smell makes it feel horrible? Weird, I know! But the mix of those two feelings is what I experienced due to nervousness.

Afterwards, I thought about why I was feeling such nervousness and concluded that ultimately, I was pitching myself (I'm The Pitch Guru after all), my knowledge of pitching, my understanding of the industry, and my book to a room full of content creators with all levels of industry knowledge, as well as, decision makers who hear pitches and green-light project's all the time. No wonder I was nervous!

The only thing that helped to eliminate my nerves were to do these 5 simple steps. Some of the steps I did several times as my symptoms started the day before the event. The night was better than I expected, (everyone said so)!

(L to R: GlenNeta Griffin; Get TV Ready, Keith Neal and Eric Tomosunas; Swirl Films, Ramona Debreaux; V-103, Wayne Overstreet; Overstreet Productions and Post, Me 😊, Tracey Tooks; UP Tv, and Tina Thompson; Aspire TV Network)

I want to share these 5 simple steps with you because I understand that many of you prefer to be unseen, and are scared out of your mind to actually sell the project's you've spent so much time creating. I hope these 5 tips help you overcome your nervousness to pitch. Remember you can spend 30 minutes just before your meeting doing these 5 steps! Good luck.

Here are five tips to eliminate fear before you pitch!

1. Affirmations - create affirmations for your success, worth, value, career, and your pitch meeting. They should all be stated in the present tense and not past or future tenses.
2. Visualize - see yourself pitching. Visualize from the moment you walk through the doors. Then see yourself feel how it feels to be green-lit!
3. Quick breathing - breathe quick short breaths while pumping your fist in the air. This works especially if you use it right before pitching. This will help you release all of the nervous energy with each breath and fist pump.
4. Guided success meditation - You tube has some really great meditations you can follow along with. You can start there or use the Headspace app.
5. Practice doing your pitch to yourself in the mirror! It gives you someone to deliver your pitch too. This really works well!

Let me know how this goes!

I was so excited to interview with Trailblazers radio!  Stephen Hart asks his guests great questions and his podcasts are usually very inspiring!

But this podcast was on fire! I may be biased because he's interviewing me, but I don't think so. You see, not only do I give some great tips on pitching; I give 5 lessons I learned from pitching 100 times, but I also reveal some of the common mistakes you make pitching too.

Stephen and I discuss some of the discoveries I've had about myself related to my self worth and fear. I'm sure, I'm not alone in these categories, and I want you to listen to them so you can be inspired.

Listen to the podcast HERE and tell me what you think! I hope I can teach and encourage you to step up and step out on such a big scale that you have no choice but to go to your next levels!

Here are some of the questions that host Stephen Hart asked me on his Trailblazers radio show/podcast:

  1. What's driving you today?
  2. Share with us 5 lessons that you discovered from this journey?
  3. What's one piece of advice you received that stood out most?
  4. What are some of the biggest mistakes people are making when pitching?
  5. What's the one pitch strategy you'd coach if you had nothing else to share?

Are you trying to get through the door?

Content Creators,

Are you trying to get through the door? Let's talk subject headings!

I was once told by a blogger of an urban media blog that he receives hundreds of emails each day, and in order for an email to get a click from him, the subject heading MUST grab his attention.

I think this is worth some practice and could be the difference between getting your next pitch or not! So let's practice. I'll help.

Choose a subject line that will make your reader want to read further.

Here are some suggestions:

If you have someone who referred you, then I would start with:

1. “Blake referred me to you – 3mm film with Michael B Jordan to star.”

“I hear you love my film’s star Michael B. Jordan, brief chat?”

“Jussie Smollett project seeking 3mm"

If you don't have a named talent, you may say:

2. "Film tackles stolen girls from Nigeria, seeks Director"

Now you try it.

ATLANTA ARE YOU READY?!  Stay tuned for more dope announcements and find out which Executive Producer and film company will be joining this amazing panel!!!

A What’s on your mind?

It's imperative to have the RIGHT thoughts in your head. If you are feeling doubtful, 9 times out of 10, you aren't affirming positivity and success!

Everyday your goal should be to do exploits; big things with your big ideas. In order to really dominate each day and each goal, you must GET YOUR HEAD RIGHT!

I encourage you today to create a list of affirmations that you can say daily! Say them in the morning and just before bed so that your subconscious mind can believe them.

Today, I JUMPED!

with No Comments

Today, I JUMPED! Whoo hoo!

Wait, If I can be honest, at first I hesitated at stepping out the way I wanted too, the way I so often urge my community to step out boldly. I don't know why I didn't go all the way to the top like I planned. Fear I guess. I hate fears' voice. It told me, "Squeaky, start lower. Start with this person first, and if they don't respond THEN go higher."

I wasted time. I wasted two weeks of my precious time. Now, I'm dealing with a value issue. I must value my time more and not waste time. I can't get it back and it ALWAYS brings me back to the drawing board. Freaking fear!

This morning I asked myself, "Squeaky, if you were the absolute BEST at what you did, what would you do?" I thought of the two separate emails I sent to two different people, and the follow ups I sent two weeks ago (in which I still haven't received a response from either persons lower on the totem pole from which I had intended to reach out) and I said to myself, "I would freaking go all the way to the freaking top!" (Yes, freaking!)

In that moment I jumped! I grabbed my phone and I JUMPED ALL IN! I oversold my self and the possibilities of what I wanted to come in and further pitch. I FREAKING oversold it! Hell, I could work on making it everything I sold them on later, was my thinking. I used all the buzz words too. I tried to make it too irresistible to tell me no. I went CEO on their a**es.

I usually wake up pretty early. Welp, the CEO was up. (CEO's be on their morning rituals like I you have one? I swear by Hal Elrod's, Miracle Morning). Anyway, the CEO responded within a matter of 10 minutes with his team CC'd.

All I kept thinking is, "Why hadn't I done this in the first place?!?

My reason for sharing this is simply to say two things:

1. GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FREAKING TOP if you can. Don't waste your precious time. Time is money. You have to value every minute of your time.

2. Tell your fear to FREAK off! When you hear that voice in your head, it's usually telling your instinct, your confidence, your intellect, and your BRILLIANT IDEA that it's bigger than they are and it controls you and not them. IS THIS TRUE? You better be thinking about all them hours you worked putting that idea together! You darn sure shouldn't want all the time to be wasted.

Look, the antidote to fear is ACTION. It's what I believe is true. You have to do the very thing you are afraid to do. You have to be all in! It's do or die! Has fear been stopping you from JUMPING? Has it been stopping you from going to the top?

Ask yourself, "Self, if you were the absolute BEST at what you did, what would you do?" Now ACT! JUMP!

On another note, here is something you should be jumping at. I'm offering two NEW workshops. One for content creators and one for entrepreneurs looking to pitch themselves to investors to grow their businesses.

Here is what you will walk away with:

1. The confidence needed for you to OVERSELL yourself and the plan to follow up with an winning Pitch!

2. A better understanding of how to put together a winning pitch.

3. My personal pitching critique to your pitch with a brainstorm and notes on how you can improve on it.

4. A fill-in-the blank pitching template that will allow you to create 30 sec pitches in the future!

Do you want the winning formula to help strengthen your pitch 30-100% and the confidence to sell it?

Hurry, JUMP on what may be the best decision you ever decided to make!

Here is what people are saying about my services:

"My girls say it too...They saw how uncomfortable I was talking about my business before I met you and how I am now. We always joke...That the money spent was so worth it! That's because of what you do."

~Krista Barnett, The BootBand Co.

"Squeaky empowered me by giving me the tools to do my own work; now I can use what she taught me to pitch other ideas and products that go beyond my book."

~Alicia Moss, Moss Girls - Body Confidence

"Brilliant.Thank you for sharing your wisdom, knowledge and expertise. You have created a winner out of me from the tools and strategies in this book and the personal coaching. I am ready to pitch my way to the top."

~Lucinda Cross, Activator CEO, Vision Board Kit

"It was a real eye-opener and gave practical concrete steps to be prepared as possible before stepping into a room. A lifesaver for anyone about to take a meeting with potential collaborators. I got my deal using her techniques."

~Greg Paul, Screenwriter, Script Consultant
