Why You Should Create A Show/Series Bible

Do you have a webseries or tv show idea? Are you creating the right pitching materials?

You should be creating a show/series bible.

The first thing you should do after the idea drops in your head, is create a pitch bible. In short, a pitch bible (sometimes called a show/series bible for television networks) is a document used to help create and communicate your story idea, and help the buyer (the network or studio house), understand your concept as you see it. Constructing a bible is the best development tool you can use for your project. Making a bible will ensure you know everything about your project from loglines to episodes to story arc and voice syntax! Add as much information into your bible as you can to make sure anyone reading it will see exactly what you envision. Creating a bible says I have more than just a concept: I fully understand the story and characters I am selling. It will help you to know where your story is going. The bible helps the buyer to understand the arc of the series or film, its mood and tone, and the setting of your story. If it’s on a beach, is it in New York or California? (Those are completely different beaches and you should be specific in your description of them.) Your specificity in the bible will sell your idea and help the buyer carry your idea out as envisioned and sell it to others. All writers and show creators should get in a habit of creating a bible whether anyone ever sees it or not. Then it does not matter what questions producers, investors, or development executives ask because you will most likely have the answer. If picked up, a team of writers and producers will need to use the bible to create episodes for seasons to come and it will serve as the blueprint.

Do you see the importance of creating a bible now?
